Sari Akminas wants to talk as if it were the last day of his life. Even from the roof of a building in the centre of Damascus, where shooting and the echo of bombardments “replace”, the piano sounds, his habitual daily companion in such a day. But there has not been a sign of life as usual in Siria in last two years.

Life is the cheapest “item” to lose in this country.

In fact the bet for life cannot be made. This is what makes him talk. He is one of Syrians who testifies that Civil War in Syria can’t remain within its borders if there is still dilemma to resolve matters sooner. Until now the 27 year old has worked as a journalist. Now he is one in the “unknown lists” of unemployed people in Syria.

“Now I'm doing nothing, I have tried to find a job but nearly no one is hiring anymore. The newspapers are closed. I did few things regarding photograph on low level”, Sari says.

In a terrific interview for IP Magazine this Syrian journalist tells that 100 000 dead people will haunt the world conscience if international community will not end up “Syria case’. But he feels the world has forgotten them and got stuck in a debate between US strikes and doing nothing.

Intervention of Arab spring and civil war Sari belongs to the cast of people who still don’t believe that international community is doing any serious attempt to stop "bloodshed”. He fears and has doubts that there might be fabricated details “as in Iraq”, only to make it possible to intervene and to leave Syria for long time in never endless conflict.

“Intervention has never looked easy. At this moment I'm at a roof top of a building, with all the amusement tools and hoka waiting to see the strike live. And I think that all this propaganda is just to show the public opinion that the west is committed to the human rights and chemical weapons are indeed red line, here I want to rise an issue; so more that 100.000 dead and more than 5 million homeless in Syria could draw a red line to military intervention!!??”, he says.

As it was in Kosovo 14 years ago and in other countries which experienced the genocide, United Nations seems to have failed even for the Syrians hope.

“UN has tried last year to stop the fight but it failed, and this is because it is in no one’s interest to bring stability to Syria, they just said it and left the fighters side to figure out how to do it, and since both sides have no self management, the UN has failed, and it will fail again in any attempt to cease fire”, Sari said. He shows this big distrust even in what the world is waiting anxiously - results of use of chemical weapons where 1.500 people were died.

“Here are still 20 UN experts. They said that they will address report in 2 weeks and then we will see what will happen. I think that all they care about is their hidden interests and to make statements that don't help solving the situation”, he told IP Magazine.

Journalists for martyrs and dead dogs

What has remained for a journalist if there are no words, written or spoken, there is evidence etched in every part of Syrian slaughter. His pictures spread over the world don’t have anything untold, they don’t have comment. Scenes taken from his camera will shock the world for a long time. Images of a minced baby by various arms, even chemical weapons tell that regime has its base in blood and fear.

Sari has never before been a photographer. He was editor in chief in one of the most popularized daily newspapers in Damascus, ‘Baladna’, which got closed shortly after war broke out. Its building in the centre of Damascus now is completely ruined. But he has to work to make some money.

“In Syria there is a battle for everything and it is not time to stay blind”, he said. Pretension of being an objective journalist in a civil war is very unlikely. Maybe this is a story that could thus help many journalists, in the East and beyond. "Wars and after-war periods are not times where the principles of the profession are a standard. You can not be objective in this situation. Everyone is caught on one side and is defending its side. Efforts to be objective are daily challenged. If a murdered person belonged to the army the state holds him up as a martyr while a killed rebel is referred to as a "dog" and otherwise "martyrs and dying dogs" , each party calls its own dead martyrs whereas opponents are "dead dogs”, says Sari.

This reporter has something different to say compared to the last message of Bashar Al Assad in a mosque in Damascus. "With few simple words: We will find peace if all mosques are razed. All the bad started from mosques and consequently Syrians are very influenced by sheikhs", he says bitterly.

However it does seem as proper time for the Arab world to acknowledge another Salman Rushdie decorating him with a "fatwa".

A World Cup in Syria

Syria is flooded by many groups of foreign fighters who look as if they are waiting the World Cup not in football, but for Jihad. "We do not want these people in our country. We want them out as soon as possible and we support any action intented to expel them", he says. To those who share his viewpoint the death of foreign fighters in Syria is not an act of sacrifice deserving praise or gratitude. No matter on whose side they're fighting, for or against the regime, they are not to be held as respected fighters.

This also applies to the Albanian rebels, some of whom have already been confirmed to have been killed in this war. "Albanians are brave warriors, trained very well by their experience in numerous such wars. But they have come to Syria for two reasons: as Jihad Islamists and mercenaries", he says.

In his story colored with morbid nuances of the metamorphosis of a protest the days of vigor of an oppressive and corrupted Syrian regime cannot return. Syria of regime’s days now is too late to be repaired.

“At the beginning we didn’t see any sign that things will be like this. But during Ramadan 2012 the situation became hopeless to cease fire and stops the bloodshed. Checkpoints made the hunger stronger making everything extremely expensive and making “cheap” only loss of the people’s life”, Sari said.

For this young man, grown up in regime’s epoch but used to living as a “party man”, at the beginning security reasons seemed something not to be considered. He has a west man life style, including the use of social networks. His profile in Facebook, doesn’t resembles to belong to a person fighting for his existence in a grim war.

Before this time young people in Syria have hoped for soothing winds of change as “Arab spring” appeared in its outset but had very soon to be transformed in an civil war. However there is something that can not be killed by regimes and ‘war lords’ in Syria. This is the rejection to accept killing children and the freedom expression, something still unknown for Syrians. There is also something that scares him, at night in Damascus.

“I don’t care about security and danger. What kills me is an empty and silent Damascus during the night awaken only from shooting and screaming of bloody murders”, he says.

Sari speaks for Damascus under siege starving for food and water and with the fear that international intervention will bring other victims and the deaths will find them hungry. But things became equal to death in Syria when it comes to battle for life.

“I live day by day, I can't even plan for what I'm gonna do tomorrow because no one knows what might happen”, he says. In this late summer in Damscus, while the world is not ready to stop atrocities in Syria, the hope for not repeating a story of Iraq, seems to be sublime. Regardless of what is happening in Syria, this guy still sees Syrian dictator Bashar al Asad, as a guarantee for a multi-religious Syria. Finding a solution and bringing peace is still something faraway for him. He is seeing another Iraq with more than a decade of endless war.

But his hopes seem to be gloomy and the future is more nebulous than ever.

What he wants to highlight is the ambiguous that in Syrian Army commanded by Bashar al Asad there are soldiers of Syria’s 18 sects and not only Alevite, but the crime against one another is ongoing. When bloodshed started, the UN, the US and major European countries committed to resolve the crisis. Now there is only one product of the hesitation; graves which will be wounds for many generations.

Anyway before the missiles are fired, the Syrian nightmare still didn’t convince Sari to leave this country to join millions of Syrians refuges who have flooded Middle East. He strongly believes in Syria which “will not disappoint him”.
